Невозмутимый строй во всем, / Созвучье полное в природе
Fyodor Tyutchev, “In Ocean Waves a Melody” (1865)
Koett is Alexander Tochilkin, whose name has stood behind some of the most influential projects in Russia’s IDM and tech-house scenes. (Not to mention what came afterwards.) His professional timeline can just justifiably be traced from 2005, when he––with two friends––formed Modul, itself the backbone of Krasnodar’s Fuselab label. A southern sound was born.
When, in 2012, Modul then reached a natural conclusion, Tochilkin formed the duet Wols and then the even sunnier house of Koett. What worldview lies behind this effort? “Take things easy and don’t get upset. Life can really excite you, lift you up and inspire something kind.” This is the long road to decency.
In more recent times, he has spoken of his work thus: “When I compose, the melody is always the most important aspect. That’s what I prepare before anything else. The arpeggios and atmospheric motifs come first… and only afterwards do I handle the rhythm. By working in that manner, I can be confident my catalog is suitable for more than just dance floors. The melodic components could operate independently of the rhythm and be played within an ambient or lounge set, for example…”
