Sometimes I’ll be drunk with harmony again, / Or will weep over my visions, / And it’s possible, at my sorrowful decline, / Love will flash with a parting smile.
Порой опять гармонией упьюсь, Над вымыслом слезами обольюсь, И может быть — на мой закат печальный
Alexander Pushkin, “Elegy” (1834)
Over the last five years, Mirabella Ishome has become a most influential figure. Her profile on VK, however, gives no such impression. “Hi, my name is Mira. I make electronic music. You’ll find various things here: good-natured, family-friendly beats; small-scale electronica; ambient works; a little bass music; and other modern stuff, too.” deprecating to a fault.
She detaches herself from any self-important history of local music. “Back in the ‘90s I was still a child. I don’t even know what raves are like. I didn’t catch any of that. Or, if I did, it was some parodic second wave… It seems to me that raves are a form of protest movement. So here in Russia I only found parodies of that. Folks played around with the notion of protesting. And then forgot about it. Whatever.”
Mira Ishome’s reserved or self-mocking character is similarly unsuited to bold expansive gestures: hence her creation of the Shadowax project with Nina Kraviz. Stadia, clubs, and solo listening all require different identities. None of which may correspond to awkward reality.
